Compound of jack and daw . The former element may refer either to its characteristic call, often represented as tchak-tchak, or to the name Jack. The latter, daw , means "jackdaw" in itself, from Old English *dāƿe, and is cognate with Old High German tāha , which through Middle High German tāhele became modern German Dohle
