kanji

  1. One of the three main writing systems of Japan. Kanji were borrowed from Chinese characters in three waves starting in the 5th century. There are two main ways of reading most characters, the kun’yomi (Japanese reading, 訓読み) and the on’yomi (Chinese reading, 音読み). There may also be a nanori or name reading that is used for people and places.
