Etymology

From Ancient Greek Μακεδονία ( Makedonia ) "highland", from μακεδνός ( makednos ), "high, tall", from Doric Greek μάκος ( makos ), "height, length"; in Ionic Greek: μήκος ( mekos ). In Greek mythology, Μακεδονία ( Makedonia ) was named after Μακεδών ( Makedon ), the patriarch of the Macedonians.

  1. An ancient Greek kingdom north of Thessaly, usually termed Macedon in English.
  2. The largest and second most populous region of Greece, comprising the regions of West Macedonia, Central Macedonia and East Macedonia and Thrace.
  3. Country in Europe. Official name: Република Македонија, recognized by some under the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
  4. The part of the region in south-western Bulgaria.
  5. The whole region including parts of SW Bulgaria, north Greece and Republic of Macedonia.
