Old English ġeard , from Germanic *garda- , from Indo-European *gher- ‘enclosure’. Cognate with Dutch gaard , German Garten , Swedish gård . The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin hortus , ‘garden’, Russian город , ‘town’. Compare garden .
